  6. coach Bela Karolyi (who coached Nadia 
  7. Comaneci and Mary Lou Retton). Coach 
  8. Nunno drove Shannon hard. She trained six 
  9. days a week, working on flips, twists, and 
  10. creating her own special moves.

  12. But all that hard work paid off. In 1991, 
  13. Shannon became the national balance beam
  14. champion. At the 1991 World Gymnastic
  15. Championships, Shannon helped the U.S. 
  16. team win the silver medal, and she won an 
  17. individual silver medal on the uneven bars.
